How can I make a book structured yet playful?
Ask Jan van Toorn.
Making a cohesive book can be hard, so I created a five step thesis to propel me forward.
1. Read.
2. Absorb.
3. Inform, not copy.
4. Structure.
5. Share.
I began this project by extensively researching the visionary Dutch graphic designer. I included relevant interviews and transcripts with Jan van Toorn which allowed me to experiment and work with typesetting and structuring pages of copy. In order to keep the book feeling fresh, I incorporated horizontal components and pages to have the reader further interact with the book. Overall, this project pushed my understanding of book construction and how to keep a solid working structure within it.
At the end I decided to turn the information and collected research into a slide deck that could be presented and shared in a classroom setting.
